Vilmme seemed to cook in the hot afternoon sun. Brem kept to the shade, darting from structure to structure to avoid the heat. Of course, he could handle the climbing temperatures just like everyone else who grew up near here, but it gave him a reason to keep cover without looking suspicious. He wasn’t known here, at least not in the way he was known in Harske. Brem liked that—the clean slate of a new town, the potential for work, the lift of the unease when he walked around the alleys at night. He didn’t feel like he was being watched here, like someone was following his every movement.
